By analyzing feedback and outcomes, Karat has identified specific best practices for screening in top talent and leveling the playing field. Before Karat, Lus managed engineering teams at Indiegogo and Rackspace, founded a couple startups of their own, worked as a software engineer and research consultant, and graduated with a couple computer science degrees from MIT. Lus has given talks and workshops at Velocity, NCWIT, Apple, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and various universities and schools. Krysti Specht

Sr. Workforce Development Specialist at Office of Economic and Workforce Development

Krysti moved from Southern California to San Francisco in 2006 to attend San Francisco State University, where she obtained her BA in English and BS in Public Health. While attending SFSU, she began working for the Japanese Community Youth Council. Krysti spent nine years working for the Japanese Community Youth Council in the San Francisco. During her time as Associate Director with JCYC, she oversaw college outreach programs in 12 schools and with 25 staff that provided direct counseling to over 2,500 students annually. She was an acting Fellow for the Women’s Foundation of California in 2013-2014, where she researched, designed and lobbied for a Senate bill that required the implementation of degree tracking services in all community colleges throughout California. A passionate supporter and advocate for access, Krysti has a Master’s Degree in Policy Management from Georgetown University, where she focused on financial aid reform for students in higher education. While in Washington D.C., Krysti was the Director of State Outreach Initiatives for the Council for Opportunity in Education. In this role, she lobbied and advocated for low income, first-generation college support programs nationally and at the state level. Krysti Specht is currently a Senior Workforce Development Specialist for TechSF, a workforce training initiative under the Office of Economic and Workforce Development in the City & County of San Francisco. Within this role, she supports the pipeline of readied professionals seeking tech jobs through funding opportunities, apprenticeship, online educational tools and exposure events for job seekers.

Sutton’s experience includes years of establishing partnerships with large brands to early stage startups. As a leading voice in diversity and inclusion in tech, Sutton shares his thoughts on solutions and culture in various media outlets where he has been featured in TechCrunch, USA Today, and the Wall Street Journal. In addition to mentoring and advising early stage startups, Sutton’s life goal is to educate entrepreneurs who are passionate about using technology to change the world. Wayne has over 14 years experience in technology, design and business development. Wayne has been recognized as one of the Silicon Valley 100 coolest people in tech, one of the 52 hottest new stars in Silicon Valley, one of the 46 Most Important African-Americans In Technology by Business Insider and one of the Top 100 most influential black people on social media in 2014. In 2014 Wayne co-founded BUILDUP, a non-profit designed to support an inclusive ecosystem of entrepreneurs through educational workshops and fellows program for underrepresented tech founders. In 2011, Wayne co-founded the NewMe Accelerator, the first minority led startup accelerator/incubator in Silicon Valley which was featured in CNN Black in America 4. Prior to NewMe he worked in media in Raleigh, NC for NBC17 and the News and Observer. In 2009 Wayne was the co-founder of TriOut, a mobile location-based startup in Raleigh, NC which exited. Wayne has worked with large brands, Inc 500 companies and advises several technology startups. With a passion for community Wayne has organized Social Media Conferences, tech meetups, and hackathons such as the world’s first Food Hackathon, which assembled leading food innovators, chefs, developers, designers and entrepreneurs to collaborate on solutions in the food ecosystem. April Speight is the CEO and founder of Vogue & Code, a digital platform created to assist tech newbies and aspiring technologists in transitioning into a career in tech. She uses her platform to debunk the myth that you must know how to code in order to work in technology by promoting non-coding careers in tech and featuring first-hand experiences from minorities within the industry. April entered the world of technology following a pivot from the luxury fashion industry to the world of IT. She has worked with various corporate and non-profit organizations to implement new software and revise their technology strategies. Having been considered a Creative Technologist, April uses her love of creative thinking to help others solve business problems with technology while creating a welcoming environment for those with little to no technical skills. Unable to shy away from her love of fashion, April has also created the Culture Shop which features specially curated tech swag to help underrepresented minorities celebrate and promote their current (or new) place in the tech industry.

I grew up in Detroit, attended University of Michigan, and moved to the Bay Area in 1997. I've worked at small and large companies including Ford and Yahoo. For the past 11 years I've been a Software Engineer and Tech Lead at Google. I've served on numerous internal hiring and promotion committees, and hosted and mentored many interns. One of my favorite things is to do outreach to high-school and college students from underrepresented groups in CS, and evangelize CS as a vocation. My career has largely been centered around enabling online communities and social interactions, and I'm happy to talk about that, how I work with various roles, tips on interviewing, or software engineering at Google / in general.
